Lori Peek is a sociologist, and co-director of the Center for Disaster and Risk Analysis at Colorado State University. She is currently a visiting research scientist with the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. 

In 2011, she published the book "Behind the Backlash: Muslim Americans after 9/11." She has been working on the topic since she was in graduate school at the University of Colorado.


While disasters are traditionally thought of as natural events, they can also be human-caused, and have significant impacts.
Disasters also often lead to resilient communities. People are traumatized, and will come together in an effort to recover.  But in a human-induced catastrophe, people will look for someone to blame.
